I know, right? Best I can tell, the name is the Anglicized spelling of a Cherokee word meaning “grassy place.” So many place names – towns, rivers, mountains – in the South have a wonderful lyrical quality, and such interesting meanings behind them. As I understand it, the town was established along a Native American trade route (foot path) that may have been thousands of years old.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and we have a lot of Native American place names too. I’ll let you know when my puzzle with Hiawassee is posted. The info you gave me will help.
